#AskPracMed – Can I use a crepe bandage for a severe bleed?

The short answer is no — a crepe bandage is not appropriate for a severe bleed. Crepe bandages don’t provide the structure needed to create a proper clotting environment, and they’re not designed to maintain the kind of firm, accurate pressure required to control serious bleeding.

For traumatic injury, you need a trauma bandage that allows you to pack wound cavities with gauze and then apply controlled compression over the top.

When it comes to bleeding control, good accurate pressure is the goal, and crepe bandages simply can’t deliver that. For holding a dressing in place, or minor grazes, that is where a crepe bandage comes in.
