Burns from thermal contact or electrical sources need a minimum of one hour under room temperature running water. Cold water sounds instinctive but should be avoided, particularly for large or deep burns as it accelerates hypothermia and compromises core temperature. Any unaffected parts of the body should be treated for hypothermia while the burn site is being cooled. For chemical burns, consult the Safety Data Sheet for the specific chemical first. If that’s not available, flush with water immediately and keep flushing. The solution to pollution is dilution. All significant burns require medical assessment after initial management.
