Traumatic shock is one of the most misunderstood terms in first aid. It is not simply feeling shaken up after an incident. It is the body’s inability to circulate blood to tissues at a cellular level. The most common type in trauma is hypovolemic shock, caused by blood loss. It progresses through three stages: stage one, where the body is coping; stage two, where the body is compensating hard; elevated heart rate, blood withdrawing from the extremities; and stage three, irreversible shock, where the body can no longer maintain function. Understanding these stages and recognising the signs is what allows you to act early enough to make a difference.
